Balloon Fiesta Teams Up with New Mexico Heart Institute

Volunteers Participate en masse at Project Heart Start Day

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Volunteers from the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta® will participate in the 2015 New Mexico Project Heart Start Day, a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) class offered by the New Mexico Heart Institute Foundation at the 8 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. session on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at the University of New Mexico’s Johnson Center and Field.

According to the American Heart Association, sudden cardiac arrest affects more than 400,000 people in the United States annually and is the leading cause of death each year; killing more than breast cancer, lung cancer and HIV/AIDS combined. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta prepares for such medical emergencies by providing an on-site comprehensive emergency response team at all times during the event. Now, Balloon Fiesta volunteers, also known as Navigators, will have the capability to provide compression-only CPR until Public Safety arrives at the scene.

The Project Heart Start training session will last about 40 minutes and will include watching a 12-minute video produced by KOAT and Dr. Barry Ramo, followed by a 15-minute skill session led by a trainer and a short demonstration of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). Class participants will learn to assess a victim of sudden cardiac arrest, correctly perform chest compressions, recognize the signs of a heart attack, and more. The CPR class is free and open to the public. Sessions take place at 8 a.m., 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.

More than 900 Navigators help before, during and after the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. In an effort to expand the safety measures at Balloon Fiesta, the volunteer team has joined with the New Mexico Heart Institute Foundation’s program, Project Heart Start, to take advantage of the CPR training.
