Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is collecting photographs that document its 40 year history.
The Balloon Fiesta is asking the community to share old pictures of 13 hot air balloons launched from the parking lot of Coronado Shopping Center in uptown Albuquerque on April 8, 1972.
The photographs may be used in collateral materials spotlighting the 40 year history of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in 2010.
"We have grown and evolved so much since the small gathering of 13 balloons in 1972," notes Paul Smith, Executive Director. "Many people have fond memories of the early days of Balloon Fiesta, and we want to archive that history while we mark our 40th event," Smith added.
The Balloon Fiesta staff hopes to collect a variety of old photographs of pilots, favorite balloons, and attendees from the Balloon Fiesta's earliest days.
The photo submissions would be used by the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta to promote the event. All photographers must be willing to license their photographs to the Balloon Fiesta and will be credited if their photo is published. Please include the year and a brief description with the names of people in the photo, if possible. For information about the photo history of the project, call Kathie Leyendecker, Media Relations Director, at (505)228-9874, or email at

From a small gathering of 13 balloons in 1972, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta has grown to become hands-down the largest balloon event in the world. Held each year during the first week in October, the Balloon Fiesta hosts hundreds of balloons and even more pilots.
